In the PacNW we can do short runs inside the Puget Sound or islands north to some extent but offshore is the only option for most of the west coast and a minimum of 24 hrs between most ports and longer for some. Not to mention rough seas, potentially very high winds, etc.
Eastcoasters whine about how boring the ICW is, I'd give Jeremy's left nut to have a potentially five thousand mile trench in which to travel north and south and east and west.
