This was one of the challenges - the hard top must go forward as it goes down...

having had dodgers in the past that would not allow the winch handles to spin 360 degrees, I paid careful attention to this. When it is up, all of the winches can be operated 360 degrees with a two fisted handle. When it goes down, it travels forward far enough to clear the winches. The top is less than 5" above the deck though it looks higher in this photo. You can see why the notch in the dodger was necessary - headroom for the companionway. A few other features are visible: the winches are recessed in wells for multiple reasons. It gives more clearance on the hardtop and lowers the lead for the lines coming aft from the mast through the line conduits. The little 40 is sitting up on a shelf molded in the well so that the top is even with the 56, that way the handles on each clear over the top of the other. The line tail boxes are molded in and self draining, there is one on each side and all of the lines can be tidies up into them. the aft hoop of the dodger has that peculiar shape to clear the hatch sprayhood, and makes a very nice handhold going below when the top is down. I designed the companionway so that the swinging doors and screen doors can be kept installed together - just swing the one you want closed. The slot is for drop boards, which can go in to lock the boat securely or if really bad weather is expected. The bottom drop board can be replaced by a box step affair that becomes a bridgedeck, same height as the seats and provides the extra step needed to come up from below while keeping the water out. The idea is I would leave that in place offshore in bad weather. The sliding hatch is designed to slide either to the screen doors, to the swinging doors, or to the drop boards and locks in each place. There are a couple of additional machined bits of hardware to make that work, done after this photo was taken.

There are also line tail boxes in the coamings. These were sealed off from the interior and drain outboard to the deck. The little half ring holes allow you to stick your finger in to open the hatch, that way you can stuff a whole coil of line in there at once or just feed some in without opening the hatch. There are four of these boxes, for port/starboard main/mizzen sheets.
