I purchase all the paper charts down to where the cruising guides take over. What ever scale necessary to see the big and medium picture. For the small picture I switch to the guide. Or all of them for the area.

Having said that, we primarily use the chartplotter (C-series running Navionics) on passage until we get close to our landfall, then all hell breaks loose trying to figure out which is right usually ending up with a combination of the guides, chartplotter and our eyes as the final confirmation.
