Following-up on a tip from Al Schober, I purchased the new version of Sea Clear. Todd, check it out:
Previously, I had downloaded OpenCaptain but quickly discovered there's quite a steep learning curve with using it. In particular,
I had problems downloading the charts using the link which Greg gave last month. Maybe you will have better luck, but for
the price that Cruising Services was asking, I decided to go with them. I got the flash drive and for another $30 they loaded
at my request all of the charts for the East Coast of Canada onto the drive. If this is too expensive for you, for $20 you can
get the CD with the program and all charts for the coastal US (plus some other areas and extra goodies). Yeah, I know you
can download these for free - but time (and aggrevation) saved is worth something too. Greg has experience with both and
prefers Open Captain. For now, I'm going to go the SeaClear route, though. Time will tell whether this was a good decision.
But, I'm NOT planning on using this as a (primary) chartplotter. It's a back-up which can also be used for route planning.
Since I have the Garmin chartplotter with pre-loaded coastal charts, a Garminn micro-SD for Canada, full paper chart coverage
for areas in the US I expect to go to in the forseeable future, and a few dozen paper charts for Canada, the Sea Clear
charts can be used to save me a fair chunk of change in not having to buy so many more Canadian paper charts.
So, while I have some experience with the chartplotter, I don't have real experience yet with Netbook
navigation. I'm all set up with it, though: I also bought (following Greg's suggestion) a hockey puck GPS receiver for the
computer.
