Of course, paper charts are not very waterproof, and are much harder to protect in the cockpit than an iPad or even a laptop
We keep everything below in any event, Unless singelhanding in tricky waters it works fine.
Obviously, this depends on the boat, and how each sailor weighes the compromises
One huge advantage in electronic media is that you have backup.
Who carries back-up charts?
Notice too the high and rising cost of paper charts, especially if you want to be up to date.
If yo stay in one area, this is unimportant, but for long distance cruising the cost of paper charts is quite serious
Electronic charts are going the other way, with prices dropping.
I think/hope that the dirt cheap price of Navioics for iPad/iPhone will drive the other electronics chart prices down.
The quality of navionics oniPad is excellent.
