For me, I don't want the chartplotter at the helm

I tried it and didn't like having the chartplotter at the helm. It makes it too easy to navigate via a monitor instead of your eyes. It's a bit of a hassle going to the navigation station to check on your position and the mechanics of what's around you but it forces you to use your eyes more often. I think that keeping the chartplotter at the helm has the potential for making a lazy sailor and one that hasn't the experience needed to read water and conditions in emergency situations.

Navigating by eyesight is much like playing the piano, the more you practice, the better you get.

In reality, I do jump up and down to confirm my position on the plotter but it's worth it. I've gotten pretty good at reading what's around me visually. The plotter is there to confirm or correct my visual perception.
