Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

We have been using a PC with GPS

exclusively for navigation since 2004.
About 25000 miles. Canada US Bahamas, Cuba, Bermuda Azonres UK Norway. Sailing about 5 months/year, full time.

I do not know why to spend money on a plotter with a tiny screen.
Only problem with PC is that we have a desktop on the boat, and it is power hungry. Laptop makes more sense.
Most chart plotters are more energy efficient, although the netboks do not too badly.
Chartplotters are spendy, particularly if you cruise far and have to keep buying charts.

With a desktop, 2 laptops and a handheld Garmin 76, we have given up on paper. We started with paper backup, but have never come near to using it.

We need computers on board for other reasons, mostly work, so their cost is not an issue.

Just bought an iPad, partly because Navionics charts for Europe are so cheap. iPad will be handy, and spare, not only nav device. Will try it in the summer
