Anyone see the latest on Ensenada race accident...
Here's their SPOT tracks
better URL for the SPOT tracks
WOW
The thing is the skipper had done the race before...
You're correct that NO sensible person would set the waypoint on a fatal headland, then have an autopilot steer there.
That island is only 2 miles long
Jon speculated a reasonable scenerio below...
I a 2 mile island doesn't display on your chart plotter using any reasonable scale in that context...
You're showing a RASTER chart
Yes, but who leaves a chart plotter they are using at a much larger scale
I'm just saying it's possible
But if I am understanding correctly...
I agree we're exercising speculation about WHAT happened; however,
I hesitate to jump in but WTF
are you trying to pick a fight with Larry?
I almost hit a bunch of small canoes off El Salvidore
Every chartplotter I know of has a split screen.
That's a good idea I never used Dan
There's no reason to go wide.
Yes -- I generally set the screen to "look ahead" only about 2-5 miles
I use the split screen but I use half for Radar
Hey Steve! send me an email and tell me what you've been doing.
We are sitting here in La Paz for a couple of weeks. Then
Split screens w/ radar overlay gives you a lot of options
You guys do still use the old Mark1 eyeballs too, right?
Certainly eyes, ears, (and tactil feedback like helm pressure, vibrations, etc.) are the usual tools we all depend on.
Wouldn't dream of heading out in fog without Radar & CP
What would you do if you lost power?
Well, key words are "heading out"
What did you do back in the day?
Dead reckoning same as everyone else
Clap Navigating
sure, use old Mark1 eyeballs to look at the CP screen
I've gone inside and outside of those islands so many time I couldn't count
This is pretty much my thinking also...
I wasn't thinking about "cruising class". I
Well it gives the cruisers a chance to enter...
