That's why they have the ability to 'split screen'. You put one scale on one side and a larger scale showing all the hazards on the other. 3 to 5 miles usually works well, that gives you 20 to 30 minutes. If the skipper doesn't do that it just plain 'stupid'.

It's a PITA. but that's the way to use a chartplotter on a passage. If you don't you may crash into something.
