Yes -- I generally set the screen to "look ahead" only about 2-5 miles

Depending on how dense the area is, we might be down to harbor view with only about 1/4 or 1/2 mile on screen.
Same with radar -- we generally we keep it set for close range (we want detail and are more concerned with near danger). AIS is helpful for identifying (most) big stuff, further out.
