It's ironic as sailboats become, lighter, faster and easier to sail, they need more electric power.

This is the engine for the 36' Fontaine designed daysailer I've been following(photo from Rockport Marines facebook page). When I saw the huge additional alternator(it already has one high output alt), I went back to the design requests by the owner.

The owner wants everything power operated, sheet winches, vang, main sheet, even furlers, touch of a button. Makes sense, there's a lot of talk about these power assisted devices, we''re all getting older.

This Volvo is being set up as a generator as much as an auxiliary sailboat engine(saildrive). It will put out some amps! On the other hand, the engine may not be required to move the boat all that much as a daysailer.

Seems like we're lagging behind on power type and generation design. It's little wonder that hybrid electric drives with small diesel generators will evolve quickly.

I do love the belt set up on this. It's well designed and built. I would guess you could put some strain on this main pulley via the long leverage, if you had a slipping belt problem(not likely with these belts).
