The alternators normally provided by Volvo 
In Response To: One wonders why they need a second alternator ()
have much less real capacity than the rating.
With a hot engine room, output drops.
Cheap automotive alternators have a short life if run anywhere near full load for any length or tiem
(I know Volvo does not sell the alternators cheaply, but if you scrape the green paint off, or do some research, the Volvo installed original is probably the same junk quality as my Volvo alternator and starter)
Sorry if I sound anti-Volvo, but it comes from first hand experience.

- It's not the shock loads but the cyclic loading.
