I've spent a lifetime in the home build/restore field. Most of what I do, you can DIY. But DIY skill levels run from abysmal to mediocre. Occasionally you see some fine DIY house work even beyond that of skilled pro's, performed by people that have little experience, but that is very rare. There really is no substitute for experience.

I've seen a few perfectly maintained DIY boats, but of those owners, most know what expertise they fall short on(that takes experience to learn, too), and hire that out.

I can keep my old Alden operating smoothly and even look pretty good, for a DIY maintained boat. But I don't fool myself, the boatyard down the hill could turn it into a museum piece by comparison, for a mere 20k or so,...per year.
