It depends one should have the skills while at sea to fix things that are needed to get you home/to shore..rigging a rudder, repairing a sail, jury rigging a halyard, bleeding injectors, changing fuel filters..on and on.

When in port it depends; do you have more time or money, do you like woodworking or not, do not know how or want to learn how to do glass work..etc.

When "out" survival skills are a must..in port your preferences to spend time or money.
