I am looking a sailboat, 30 years old that spent a year in salt water 12 years ago. Is it compromised?
Was it sunk 12 years ago?
No joke. The boat was just sailed south and back. I just heard from this guy that salt water is a no-no. Even one year. (nm)
Yeah. Right. Tell that to our 30-year-old boat...
ell that to my 43 year old boat....
I boat almost exclusively in salt water
Isn't intense sun also a huge contributing factor...
Guy at your marina has no idea what he's talking about.
Damn good advice (nm)
If it has been properly barrier coated, then should NO problem
Is it my imagination or this blistering only begin back
Resin reformulated after "74 oil embargo...
IT was worse then -- but it's still an issue for some boats
absolutely
Thanks for the responses. He also says that storing the boat with the mast up is even worse than salt. True?
The biggest problem with storing the mast up.....
I think he's just trying to help me make my boat list more manageable. (nm)
Get AWAY from this guy!!!!!!!! Zillions of boats are land stored with mast up and with NO problem.
I would be concerned about mast-up storage ...
It's a deck stepped mast, and my friend says it doesn't matter. It's the huge loads on the stands is the issue. (nm)
Clive, find a boat you like, hire a surveyor, ignore your friend. (nm)
Clive
Not for me
Who is your source of wisdom on this, Clive? There are a lot more pressing questions...
Clive - Are you putting us on here? Or is the marina guy having fun with you? . . . (pic)
Your guy sounds like a few members at our club. If they say it enough it becomes a fact. LMFAO (pic)
sailing in salt water (link)
It does better if rinsed and
So - are you saying that it is better not to know that . . . (pic)
That didn't strike me as commercial spam
You are right Tom - Sorry . . . (pic)
Hughhh?
Sounds to me like the small fractures are already there.
I think we can all agree salt water is more corrosive and active as an electrolyte than fresh water
The issue -- for the most part isn't salt water corrosion
salt water is for sailing , fresh water is for skiing (nm)
no (nm) (link)
Sorry..I can't stop laughing long enough to write a response. Salt water ruins a boat?????? (nm) (pic)
Les, you won't believe how common a worry it is inland for many idiots pretending to be 'experts". LMFAO! (nm)
Salt water does things to a boat that fresh water doesn't.
Dave, this thread makes me laugh because I hear stuff like this at the club all the time. You musta too in Albany no? (pic)
Salt water is corrosive...
The most important thing about those criteria is that you could be steered away from a great boat.
You have to be kidding! Scotty Ann is 60 years old . . . (pic)
If you have to ask these questions
Jerry that's a poor attitude from an educator
I'm just trying to keep it real
Everyone needs to learn from someone, and asking questions does NOT make a person undeserving of anything.
you were the one who raised the question of students
That would be great if I'm off base about teaching.
the importance of listening
Ah, yes, the Jerry and Larry Show...I never miss an episode, myself. (nm)
Respectfully disagree ;)
you can get in the game
Yup, and by making expensive mistakes
owned 6 before this one
Well, I disagree. It seems to me the questions being asked suggested.....
LMAO! So, what is the lake sailor's equivalent of "Old Salt", anyway? I'd love to hear this guy's take on those of us..
Not necessarily ... depends on where it was
I guess..
There's a guy at our club that has the same boat as mine, but it's been almost abandoned
That would be (link)
At my YC on Lake Lanier, we called 'em "Old Farts." (nm)
To paraphrase and old song...
Probably. You should look for a boat that has never been in water. (nm)
Don't put it in the water when you buy it and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble! (nm)
and save a lot of money, too! (nm)
What a thread! Stupid me, I have never given the issue any thought.

Re: Great Lake sailors have a false sense of superiority.
Ahh yes...Gitchigumi
Depending on which lake (exclude Erie) they aren't lakes
