You cannot completely protect the boat from precipitation when you store mast up --there is no way to seal around the mast and shrouds. Rain and snow come down the shrouds and moisture settles in around where the shrouds connect to the boat. Add some freeze/thaw expand/contract cycles, and that's not always good for the fittings and the boat. However, a good surveyor should be able to tell if such equipment has been compromised by that kind of storage, so it doesn't have to be a deal-breaker. Just something else to watch for.
