Thanks for the responses. He also says that storing the boat with the mast up is even worse than salt. True?

I'm serious. The boat has been stored in the yard for the past few winters (Lake Ontario) with it's mast up. Apparently it used to have the mast lowered and it's only the last few winters that this has been the case. I've seen thousands of boats stored that way, what's the problem?
