Depending on which lake (exclude Erie) they aren't lakes

by definition due primarily to salt and mineral content levels and a discernible, at least to instruments) tide they are inland lakes especially Gitchigumi....by the big 'sea' shining waters stoods the wigwam of Nakomis, daugter of the moon Nakomis. Longfellow wasn't just using poetic license. He had it right. I don't know about the sailors but Gitchigumi IS superior.

As for Michigan it' economic woes notwithstanding it is second only to Alaska in the length of coastline of US states.
