I once bought a Lewmar 1000 windlass. I spoke with Lewmar before buying it. They said it would be fine for my 44 ft boat with all chain rode. Once delivered the instructions said this windlass would pull 700 pounds and can take a static load of 1000. In my opinion this is FRAUD. It lasted about two years. It frequently popped a 200 amp breaker. The gear assemblies on Lewmars are unserviceable. Strip a gear - replace the whole assembly. When the gears stripped I replaced it with a Maxwell VWC1200 - a far superior windlass.

Lewmar sucks.

The Maxwell is just as fast and seldom pops it's 135 amp breaker. Fifteen years and hundreds in anchorages later I replaced it with a Maxwell 1500. The cost of refinishing the old one made it more practical to replace it. I sold the old one for about half of my original purchase price.
