couldn't you just have motored forward to ease the load on the rode and then done what you normally do?

i've got an abi windlass, which i think is a copy of yours. when it's blowing hard or in a strong current i usually have the admiral motor forward while i manually bring the chain back in hand over hand. i don't use the windlass until the anchor has broken out and is hanging free...
