Different chart systems read differently. For example the "raster" charts in Nobeltec and Furuno are the same as our paper charts -- because they are just pictures of them. The vector charts on Navionics (at least for one of our chartploters) on the Northstar are very good and the Nobeltec charts very good. The Furuno's vector charts are less "imformative" because they are selective about the info.

As for "obvious", knowing that there's a jetty that's submerged...I'd say, looking at the chart, it's clear that there is something there.

Just looking at the designation, I'm not sure it's so obvious. I don't know what charts they were looking at on that sad night.

Having said that, the Barnagat inlet -- or any other jettied inlets which you aren't familar with would be one that is best approached after lining it up.

As I said, it's not an inlet that I'd take a keelboat into unless I had local knowledge.
