For what it's worth, according to someone close by, the boat hit the southern jetty, about 80 yards inside the inlet.

He also said he thought the boat hit at about 5:30(time on vhf), but visibilty was near zero in fog.

His report from VHF was that 10 minutes after the mayday, they reported 3' feet of water in the cabin.

If this is true, the photo was taken from the edge of the southern jetty, looking to the north east over the boat.

As Jons photo shows, the channel is on the other side. I'll leave it to him or anyone with local knowledge to make a guess of why he was on the southern side.

It's obvious though that had he had an engine problem, or simply started to go aground on the sand bars or for any other reason, was not able to steer and or sail, the wind and fetch, even inside, would wash you up on the southern jetty.

Maybe the submerged jetty referenced is simply the southern jetty?

or, they went right over the northern submerged jetty,....

That boat has a full keel with outside lead ballast, and needs 4' of water.
