What exactly is the proper maintenance?

I know we are supposed to lube the valves... but how is this best done? Removing the connecting hose can often be quite a pain, so how exactly does one lube a seacock?

Dive on the boat and pack grease into the thru hull? Or risk damage while trying to remove hoses that may not be reassembled properly?

If this things require such diligent maintenance, why are they not designed with a Zerk fitting or something?

Of course east coast folks haul their boats out for months at a time... on the left coast that just isn't done... so we don't have the months of down time for maintenance. Westcoaster et. al., what do you typically do?
