I have a steel boat which I expect would fare marginally better than your Gulfstar in a collision with a large ship but *NO* small boat is going to fare well on impact with a huge steel ship. Also, I don't think your analogy is inappropriate: hitting a reef with your keel is different than a ship travelling at speed hitting your topsides.
