Boat lost, 3 dead in Newport to Enseneda race
More from AP (as distributed by the Washington Post) - Aegian
Aegian was a Hunter 37
I'm not sure what difference the type of boat would make in a collision, assumingly with a very large ship.
Probably little difference. The boat's posted pictures looked pretty clean.
There won't be AIS records if it was one of the stealth
Disagree,,,
Disagree
I doubt the reef will suck you and the vessel down 15 feet and shred your crew and stuff through giant props
That I agree with!
Dan, that story reminds me of this....
Great movie! I think his first real film.
OK, OK. I made a glib remark and analogy without a lot of serious thought.
No comparison
On the other hand
Just as easy to blame it on it being a rental.
Braden! Heading east soon?
Not as soon as I'd like.
I read that it was a rental at first too, but I think it was the skipper's own boat.
One report says from the debris, "looks like the boat went through a blender"
no small boat
That would be worse than anything I could think of to happen to a small boat.
Wood chipper is gruesome
in Eastern CT
well, the boat would sink and be ripped apart
Yeah, a 100,000 HP blender!
I wonder if there was a 'notice to mariners' posted for the race?
Maybe an explosion?
I think they have ruled that out upon examination of the fragments of the boat.
Speculation is frieghter...
The most comprehensive report I have seen thus far...
Good writeup.
Latest info - SPOT tracker shows them ...
How could running into an island "shred" a boat such?
From what I'm reading on Sailing Anarchy...
From the track it appears they just ran aground on a rock
I wonder why the SPOT tracks stop just at number 50...
most recent report on a SPOT is always #50
Ah, okay, thanks.
Agreed, it is a steep sharp cliff there.
How could it break up in such small pieces? One word!
CG is wavering on what might have happened.
One word?
The Spot Slogan: "Live to Tell About It" doesn't ring true.
So being a Hunter sailing into a rocky cliff, would a Gulfstar or Shannon fared any better?
a diver could determine the answer
I believe so.
Sounding more and more like tillerman-style navigating, to me...
I thought I read some had done it before...
Jon's hunch could be right
Sure, but the skipper knew the islands were there.
Maybe inexperienced crew on watch altered course?
No signs of course altering in that tack.
So maybe Jon pegged it. Stupid and tragic mistake, if that's the case.
Hard to believe, for me because
Me too. No use in demonizing electronics, or lack of.
Can't help but notice that's a Hunter without an arch...
Could be... (or could pee)
That's really good Jon.
A classic case of a vessel “Not Under Command” for several hours is sounding more and more plausible…
My Q would be: Were they a part of a race? Who races under power? (Not to mention without sail trimming?)
Easy thing to do for someone who isn't that familiar with a particular plotter...
If my reading of a chart is correct
An observation
Last observation 04:36.35. The one before that 04:26.54
oops
cut the other end, that'll work. GRIN
Another observation...
Your observation looks a lot more accurate than mine
Then there's this report, I witness says she saw the boat run down by a tanker.
I didn't see any mention of a colission in the text
It's here, fairly early in the story, but it makes no sense
Especially at night... awful hard to see well any distance.
Or it's a misinterpreted masthead sailing light on the horizon
And she called the Mayday ?
Her claim seems bizzare, but it's right there. They must be following up on it?
I wonder if the CG in this area even has the right resources...
Latest update... ah ha! The GPS data...
LA Times going with Island therory
Sounds like an Eileen Quinn song
