Especially at night... awful hard to see well any distance.

Now perhaps she did see a big ship, but to see a little boat get crushed by a big ship at any distance away, would be quite difficult. And if she did see such a thing... as others have said, why did she not call for help, and render aid?
I have a feeling she is just wound up in the whole event and something was misinterpreted by somebody...
