How could running into an island "shred" a boat such?

I would also imagine that running into an island would also give one some time to make a radio call...
Then again if the engine is on and autopilot is set and the on watch crew falls asleep...
But the fact that the boat was found in tiny pieces... that is still somewhat puzzling... the surf/swell that night was 5-6 foot from NW, basically a following wave.
