Easy thing to do for someone who isn't that familiar with a particular plotter...

You see the islands on the chart and put the cursor on them to see how far off they are. Without realizing that you have done it you set a waypoint there. Then you set you way point to the final destination and iterface with the autopilot. The result isn't good.

A few years ago a boat sailing in this area used an offshore island as a waypoint and ended on on the rocks there while the crew was below for lunch.
