It looks like their speed fell off to about 1.0 kts about 9:49 pm. Before that the track had some variation. After that the speed is a steady 7 kts and the track straight. I would guess the wind dropped way off so they started the engine and began motoring on autopilot. They were in cruising class so the race was probably a secondary issue. Droning along on a calm night until about 1:36 am when they hit the rocks.
I can still break a sweat thinking about how I once entered a distant waypoint 1 degree longitude off when going from the Columbia River to Cape Flattery. In the middle of the night I saw a scattering of lights ahead that turned out to be La Push, Washington. That's the only lighted area along that stretch of coast for a long way. I hate to think what would have happened if the town didn't just happen to be there. The list of things I did wrong is long. I never want to depend on being that lucky again.
