I have a direct wired BP, and it has drained a battery, more than once.

But I have a wooden cockpit that wasn't designed well for heavy rain. I run an inline fuse holder right off one house terminal. I also have a check valve and the overboard outlet is way above the waterline.

If you don't have a rain water problem Gene, as Steve says, I wouldn't wire it directly, instead off it's own switch(you can leave it on). The float switches can stick while sailing. I have a signal light wired in that alerts me it's running.
