Planning a new cockpit this winter, Teak is $30.00 per board foot.

Yikes! If I buy 2x stock, I plan to quarter saw out -1/2" strips=$15/ square foot. Not quite as expensive.

I talked about this project last year. This year - as the old one gives up the ghost - I'm more seriously planning. All level surfaces will be teak epoxied on ply; unlike my existing cockpit which is solid teak bridgedeck-locker tops, etc, with teak strip decked sole.

I've been studying cockpit design, specifically, locker tops and rain scupper. Seems there are no two alike in wooden boats. Some older designs(like mine) were wetter. I plan to have dry lockers and a better looking cockpit. I like the strip sole on my boat but the solid teak locker tops-bridgdeck-aft seat/locker tops, leak quite a bit(per poor design) and don't look as good to my eye as all strip construction. My new cockpit well sides will be marine ply-epoxied and painted.

The more we sail this boat, the more we appreciate the cockpit. We're coastal cruisers, this is where we live on the water. Our family and guests love the wood, for sitting, how it gets soaked, stained, abused; it simpy dries out, and looks great, decade after decade(my cockpit, 54 years old, doesn't owe us anything).

I'm seated on the aft bench here, big enough for two, steering with my feet(taking photos). My wife is forward of the wheel. There's full room for 5 adults forward as the cockpit well is wide and the bridgedeck is deep 20" or so.

I'm posting these two boats because of the aging of the teak decking. I won't be using this locker detail: I need a teak edge that will lead rain/spray into a perimeter scupper channel. But I like the pattern of teak decking-all running fore and aft, with teak margin trim around locker openings and tops. Simple, clean lined, comfortable.

Here's NASHUA built this year:

Here's MUSTANG, same W-Class design, built here, 15 years ago:
