I've read the epoxy faux seam treatment is a no-no(probably after many similar outcomes as you had due to that West application). But are you saying there are problems adhering the teak strips as well? I'm not clear on your whole post.
I've had great luck with limited use of the traditional rubber like teak deck compounds. It seems to hold up well between much larger planks(greater expansion/contraction) I applied it to.
My present teak sole which was applied to plywood(actually fastened from beneath-not sure if adhesive was used as well) is holding up quite well after 54 years. I've never recaulked any of the seams and only a few need attention(I'm scrapping it so no matter). I won't know for sure until I demo it, but the strips don't appear much thicker than 1/2". Plus I think it was mounted on 1/2 plywood. I'll use 3/4", I don't like the flex of the build.
