It uses black deck caulk
In Response To: One method I learned(which I may use) is to fasten the strips with pan head screws, in epoxy. ()
As I recall from 17 years ago, to had NO plywood. It was end glued with slots for the caulk joints. Then it was held down temporarily by boards that compressed the decking. The boards were pulled down by the screws which were later pulled, and their former holes were filled by epoxy, then the holes were were concealed by the black caulk.

- Was going to suggest Ipe. I've used it a good bit as a replacement for Teak Works well, but hard.
