I use 40-feet of 5/16 chain and the remainder is 5/8 three-strand. Primary area is southern new england where anchorages tend to be crowded and shallow. I assume Nova Scotia is deeper and not crowded, so more chain is optional and probably not needed. In the absence of coral/rock the only need for chain is to keep the boat from drifting around aimlessly when the wind dies, and to prevent a keel wrap. Excess weight in the ends doesn't benefit any boat underway.
The 3-strand is easy to splice as others noted, and the 40-ft chain gives us enough chain to "behave well" when anchored on short scope among the all-chain crowd close by (we prefer to anchor in about 7-20 feet of water, when we can). We usually have enough nylon out to get it wet and add some stretch, but not much down on the bottom.
It's a good compromise, IMHO.
