In order to use the windlass you'd best have a rope to chain splice whicht the windlass will be "chewing" on. Since you can't be up in the front of the boat; I'm not a fan of that approach. We have 250' of chain with a 50' tail of three strand nylon. We almost never go beyond the chain-rope splice (except by accident).
The use of all chain in a situation where you aren't right on top of the windlass when retrieving or deploying the anchor makes it more, rather than less, advisable to me.
