A agree that the Maxwell makes a very good windlass -- but it's got a lot higher profile than Lewmar and it's a lot more expensive. We had one on our Sabre 42, it worked well for 11 seasons (after we got the right capstan to match the HT chain instead of the one the dealer had provided. :^)

- I think you COULD get by with a mixed rode; however,
- The gypsy usually has the chain type pressed in to it.

- FYI 5/16" chain is about 1.1 lb. per foot.
- go with a brait rode. won't asshole up and takes up less room in the locker.
