"Asshole up"
In Response To:
go with a brait rode. won't asshole up and takes up less room in the locker.

Huh. Is that a nautical term? I hear that whenever I come out of the companionway.

Anchor rode preferences...
Where is your cruising area??
I cruise the Maine coast so coral isn't a big consideration...
I'm biased towards all chain...
Mixed should be fine for New England
A line..
there's also another nasty little habit
Is keel wrap an issue when there is no bulb or wing?
Have you ever had a keel wrap?
if you have an all chain rode
Many good points and things to consider TD
as long as we are on the subject... how do you find out what chain works best?
Not enough Gene
Thanks... gotta figure out how much fits in the locker...
Most gypsies have a denomination or part number stamped into one of the pockets...
Thanks BN.
Thanks BN... found the original SL manual on the boat...
I think you COULD get by with a mixed rode; however,
The gypsy usually has the chain type pressed in to it.
Rope to chain splice may not work unattended
Is the splice tapered?
The line gets stiff if you get it wet and store it (guess) in a dark moist sail locker :^)
Yes but coming back in it's not stiff...
I'm fairly ignorant of line rode on a windlass but....
The switch can be anywhere.
I wan't thinking of the switch but the line feed...
Yes it does (should) follow the capstan
In answer to your question
Send it in checked luggage.
Something ain't right. either the hawse hole is too small or the splice is too fat. Also check your pressure/control arm
I don't like to put weight in the bow of my sailboat, but a power boat,...
Why bother?
I couldn't do that...
FYI 5/16" chain is about 1.1 lb. per foot.
My windlass takes 1/4" G4 chain..It is about 0.75 lbs/ft
Look for industrial chain suppliers...
I looked at them but
Weight is a top priority for you on the tri.
For a displacement hull I'd think SA/D should come pretty close

"Asshole up"
But of course it is! And as far as the the companionway thing....
Lewmar V700
IMHO junk! I much prefer a Maxwell RC 8
I agree...
