My last boat was designed by Robert Perry (he even sold it for me). When we were looking for a cruising boat I was talking to him about this Gulfstar I was interested in and just wasn't sure of the quality. He told me that although he wasn't a fan of Florida boats Gulfstar is the only one I should consider. He felt that they were in a different class then any other Florida made boats (Pearson, Morgan, Endeavor, Irwin, etc.) and were under rated. I know that Gulfstar made some rather strange designs and had some quality issues during the 70's which gives them a bad rap to those that are uninformed but after owning one for 10 years Bob was right. It was a damn good production boat for the money. Of course,, Bob also told me I'd get use to the hydraulic steering in a few weeks. Never happened although I found other ways to feel the helm.
Interesting thing about the price. The boat sold new in 1983 for 204,000. I paid 207,000 in 2001. With the recession I'm looking at perhaps 185 to 195. That's not bad for an old boat. I just had a survey done. Replacement value is 650,000 and current value at 240,000 (non insurance survey and I think over valued by the surveyor). I could be deluding myself and time will tell. In the end, what will happen will happen.
Yes, I sound like my dad. The scary part is the when I see my reflection in the mirror I look like him. Freaks me out.
Love the engine room and access. Although in the middle of the main saloon you can actually walk around it.
