designed only one Gulfstar. That was a 40 footer, in 1976. The general feeling in the yard was that Vince did that boat to encourage his son, Dick, who was the plant manager and wanted to produce a boat with a slightly different appeal.
Vince designed all the other boats. Your boat, or at least its precursor, was on the drawing board when I left. Vince was a good designer. He knew what made boats sail well. You might not think that from looking at an early Gulfstar 36, but there was a reason that boat was more about interior volume than sailing performance . . . Vince was weaning his Sea Rover houseboat customers away from boxes driven by engines into slightly shapelier boxes driven by sails . . . just at the time the oil crises were stifling the powerboat industry (amongst other things).
