Alpenglow reading lights remarkably "tungstenlike"
In Response To: Holes in the spectrum ()

I posted on this earlier in the year, but it bears repeating. I have tested a series of LED replacements and I find that the Alpenglow replacement reading lights (with fixtures) produce a more even reading light than the old halogen ones and the color quality is remarkably good. My electrical engineer friend who sailed with us recently noted that the voltage regulator part it uses is not the most efficient. Indeed, each light draws 3-4 watts, compared with 10 watts for the old halogen. We often turn on just one or two of the new lights and the cabin is bright enough for many purposes. At a bit over $100 a pop to replace the entire fixture, this is obviously not a cheap solution, but is a one-time expense at least.

The overhead downlights in the photo are mostly halogen with a couple test LED replacements. I haven't found a pleasing LED downlight replacement yet, but the Imtra red/white ones we use above the galley, nav station, sleeping cabins, and heads are fine for task lighting and they are extremely efficient.
