Article about night vision (or our lack of it) but the author says best for nighttime use is a kerosene lantern with an adjustable wick . . . and the illustrator, Fritz Seegers, drew something very similar to that one hanging in your saloon.
Doesn't use a whole lot of amps, either . . .
