I haven't paid too much attention to this over the years, but now that we're headed that way on Drift Away, it's got my attention. One of the blogs I follow is "Dick and Libby's Tarwathie Cruising Log", very well written and always entertaining. Dick and LIbby are in Marathon, Florida, their southern cruising destination for several years. The cruisers there just got wind of the city council's plan to severely reduce the anchoring area, increase the number of moorings, and increase mooring fees by 30%. The feeling by cruisers there is that it's not really an effort to increase revenue, but more intended to get rid of the riff raff.
I've been quite content everyplace we've traveled along the ICW, and this is just one more reason to stop in Georgia and forget about Florida altogether. There are plenty of cruisers right here in Georgia that feel similarly. And I'll tell you what, if the feds ever open up Cuba to tourism, you'll see everyone just skip right on by Florida.
I suggested that Dick contact the local chamber of commerce. It's idiot moves like this by idiot politicians that can be business killers.
Dick has a good write up on it here- Dick and Libby's Tarwathie Cruising Log- http://dickandlibby.blogspot.com/2012/02/anchoring-rights-revisited.html
