Yes there will be custom anomolies built for people who have the vision/desire and the money, but the new boats built for a "market" will try to fit a niche or mainstream where the builders perceive there is strong demand.
There have been advances in design and materials, and changes in lifestyle that affect the way people build and use boats. The large builders know what sells in the mainstream and do what they can to keep the volume flowing, and the successful fringe builders will try to aim for a specific niche buyer. The daysailers, trailer-sailors, performance mono and multihulls, and cruising builders will use materials and methods to fit a performance goal and price point. It all comes down to the fact that choices today are different than they were 10 years ago or 20 or 30.
