But I was thinking I want to build this in much the same way the original part is built... of course being able to take it all apart in the future would be an asset for cleaning or replacing a rusted coupling, I also want to ensure that no gases leak out. Will anti-sieze work for that? In a salt water environment?

There is some compound on the original now... I have no idea what it is, but the parts are well sealed together.
