The piece will be a little flimsy until it is installed. Then it will be supported from below and fastened and adhered into the coaming/decks. The scuppers around the cockpit locker lids will be key. The old set up was marginal for keeping water out. We have better ideas for that problem today.
I've poured over the internet and my photo files for how to design the teak decking. I've come to the conclusion, there are no standards. Probably because every cockpit is different and nearly every build of this type is a one-off.
Visually, I want it to look great(the existing all wood cockpit is a high point of life on our boat), structurally I want it to be very strong(stronger than original), and I want it to be bone dry below. There will be two scuppers at the seat deck height reinstalled at the widest point of the coaming where water can collect on a heel.
The 1/2" wood (Ipe) decking will be adhered to the marine ply in epoxy. I'll use the local boatyards method of screwing the decking down with pan head screws. Remove when dry-countersink full depth-epoxy in 1/2" plugs. Then traditional polysulfide deck caulk.
Here's an Alden Caravelle. I have the same man hole to reinstall(mine is bronze with teak decking). I don't like the glass well(only the well sides). I have a similar cockpit locker lid-meeting curved coaming, detail, to deal with. I don't like the varnished(silly here) margins and trim for the teak-just raw wood for me. Note the way they treated tapering the decking and meeting the margin boards. I don't like this one.
Here's a newly built cockpit. I like this streamlined trim less locker lid. But I think I have to go with a border because of my application. But I'm still designing the decking. Note here how they treated the decking ends outside the cockpit. They added a piece to the next strip to house the slender butt cut. Nice-but I don't think I'll do this. I like a cleaner look.
Here's an old Alden cockpit most similar to what I'll likely end up with. I plan do a similar bullnose(1") around the cockpit interior upper deck. That will include two long cockpit locker lids. I don't like the inside corner block detail. Funny that I find what I DON'T want as much as what I like in researching.
