a 2x4 chunk of wood on top as a sacrificial piece.
I've used nothing else for years.

A cockpit well.
Hoisting points
I will need some hoisting points.
Complication I have is the two big cockpit locker tops.
Are you planning to glass the entire inside of the cockpit well?
Yes I am, Todd, except the sole.
I would glass the sole...
Concur.
Ok,...you convinced me on the sole, but I can't go up the well sides.
The "modern" approach would be to have a gutter below the lids which drains out into the cockpit.
That is what I'm doing.
Sounds like a good plan. As regards the hinge side gutters others must have solved this previously.
Pondering hinge side...seems my memory conures up the usual.....
Here's a rough sketch in actual size of my plan.
I think the gutters are too narrow, Tom.
Fiberglass saves space, I need the wood structure around the gutter.
why not build fiberglass locker lids....
That sounds like more than I want to learn about fiberglassing.
To make the glass work easy...
Set time on polyester is more of a curse than a benefit...
And that time helped. All done and a fill coat on.
Nice work
In the end, I turned up the heat and got a second fill coat on.
UV and staining resistance?
I haven't had a problem with poly going off before I was done...
Re: Fiberglass saves space: Is a 3/4 inch gutter going to
Good thought. I'll err on the deeper side. I've seen plenty of smaller channels.
Deeper gutter means better beam support? I'd think so.
Looks about right to me. Couple things I notice......idle curiosity.
Tom, bear in mind all those trim and joining pieces are there to deal with end grain exposure.
Good thought ,thanks. I see miter margin joints both epoxy glued or caulked.

True but look closely at that newer boat.
Here's one I like with glued miters and a few other simple details...
You disappoint me, Tom
I love those, Paul!
