For what it's worth,
I think it has a lot to with the the prevalent idea that the big sailing rags make people believe they just need to throw money at it and you don't need to learn the basics. Ned nav, just spend a few thousand and get “the best”. No need to learn. Want safety aboard, once more, just throw a batch of bucks at the problem. The same rags are selling 45+ foot boats and the idea that you can take all the comforts of that shore side house with you, and oh by the way, they leave out the stuff that you WILL have to do.
I often joke about not having mowed a lawn in many years, but I don't follow up with how many times I have had to mow the bottom!
Of the people we started with, about 12 boats, three of us are still on boats. Two have been in the same marina for the last 2 years. (in the interest of honesty, we are ashore for at least 2 to4 more months). But our plans are to get back out there moving about.
I think you are correct and most rags are selling the dream, and have very little if any reality in them. In each of our DVDs and on our web site we have tried to talk about some of the trial and bad times we have had when we were moving. A toothache going down the outside of the Baja! And just plain getting sick when aboard. I can testify that having the flu aboard is MUCH worse than ashore (or am I just getting OLD!!!????
