The 'Thorny Path' is mostly day sails 
In Response To: Yep. Weeks beating is not the best first offshore experience. ()
I think that there are only 3 overnight passages to get to the VI from Miami. Rum Cay to Mayaguana, Turks and Cacios to Luperon and Samana to Puerto Rico.
Everything else is a day sail if you want.
