It can't hurt if the spouse enjoys sailing

That would be the ideal. But while sailing is an important component of cruising, cruising is not just about sailing and there are many fabulous things about cruising a person can enjoy even if he/she doesn't love (but will tolerate) the sailing. My point is if you manage it properly even the reluctant spouse who doesn't love sailing can appreciate and love the cruising life.
