Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

After cruising on our boat I've learned a lot about what I really like.

I like the size. 50 foot on deck makes for a great live aboard.

If I had the money to design and build a boat it would have a lot of Dashews concepts. I always thought he could have designed a smaller version of his boats. 50 foot affords you to have a large sail and rigging stowage area, a walk in engine room with plenty of storage and still have room for comfortable living arrangements. The design would feature at least 1/3d of the boat for sails and machinery. I remember going on a friends Cabo Rico 56. The boat had a room separate from the engine compartment that was dedicated to all the peripheral mechanical equipment ( fuel filters, water heater, air conditioners, batteries, pumps, etc.) all in one area away from the engine heat and laid out beautifully. I really liked that. I'll give up living space for that arrangement. Of course, starting with 50 feet of boat still leaves a lot of room.

A 50 foot two person boat. (with occasional guests)
